My Journey

My artistic journey began in childhood, finding solace in art amidst frequent relocations. Encouraged by my parents, I pursued art in college with the initial vision of becoming a textbook illustrator blending biology and drawing. However, a pivotal art class altered my trajectory, leading me to graduate with a Bachelor's in Fine Art from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Now residing in Atlanta, I engage in daily painting. The city wholeheartedly embraces my work, offering inspiration through its vibrant cultural scenes, landscapes, and artistic expressions.

With over 35 years of experience, my passions lie in studio and plein air painting, where I embrace the challenge of capturing nature's ever-shifting nuances.

Teaching

While I teach primarily oil painting for beginners, the diverse backgrounds of my students lead us to explore various styles and techniques. It's not just about the basics; it's about unraveling the magic of mark-making and the illusion of bringing something three-dimensional onto a two-dimensional canvas. Teaching has become an integral part of my artistic life, shaping my perspective and creating a vibrant, shared space for creativity.

Recognizing the importance of balancing attention to detail with a broader perspective is essential. I advise my students to take breaks during their creative process. Here's a personal story: once, as I stepped back from my work, I noticed a gap between the trees that unintentionally looked like a tugboat in my painting. This story serves as a gentle reminder for students to step back, view their work with fresh eyes, and gain a fresh perspective.

I also frequently employ analogies to clarify painting techniques, underscoring the significance of forming habits. Just as one naturally reaches for the blinker in a car, I encourage my students to adopt consistent practices, such as placing paints in designated spots for easy access – a way to build artistic muscle memory.

In essence, my teaching philosophy revolves around fostering an environment of continuous learning, experimentation, and the joy that comes from finding one's unique artistic voice.

Artistic Philosophy

Creating art is a deeply personal journey for me. I firmly believe in crafting from my own experiences and using my photos as a guide. Originality is key – copying others or chasing trends for commercial gain goes against my artistic principles.

Navigating the art world demands resilience and a pragmatic mindset. Despite the challenges, my passion for art remains unwavering, and I'm committed to thriving in this intricate balance of creativity and business while staying true to my unique vision.
